A mere 24 hours after declaring that no-way, no-how could Albany come up with billions of dollars in additional school aid for New York City's long-neglected students - calling the idea "lunacy" - Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno suddenly finds $8.4 billion to dole out in tax breaks, most of which would fatten the wallets of homeowners elsewhere. Talk about lunacy.

New York state lawmakers have included an increase in the amount of money given to New York City schools by $322 million in their first on-time budget in 20 years. A total of $24.6 billion was provided in the 2005-06 budget, an increase of $848 million in "formula driven and other educational assistance" to schools statewide, according to state Sen. Joseph Bruno (R-Rensselaer), the majority leader.

Minutes after telling teachers he's on their side, the state's top Republican lawmaker bashed the judge who ordered the state to send more money to New York City classrooms. Senate GOP leader Joe Bruno (R-Rensselaer) told a United Federation of Teachers conference he would fight for more money for urban schools. "We're going to make sure high needs districts get funded as they should," said Bruno, drawing praise from union President Randi Weingarten. Weingarten wants the Legislature to comply with the order of state Supreme Court Justice Leland DeGrasse to open up the classroom funding spigot.
